While many people make an effort to brighten the front of their homes with festive displays, the village has not had a public display since the Christmas lights committee folded due to a lack of people involved.
Now the parish council, with help from county councillors Heather Smith and Andy Turner, has stepped in to provide a Christmas tree and lights display at the Randolph Community Centre.
Parish council chairwoman Cllr Barbara Nicholson said: “We had lights on the trees at the top of the village about five years ago, as for the Christmas tree, it would be about 10 years. It is brilliant that they are back.”
The display cost about £2,000 and, if successful this year, the parish council hopes to bring back the lights that were put up elsewhere in the past.
The lights were turned on by resident Mary Hill after winning a raffle that she bought with her last pound coin while visiting the village lunch club.
She said: “I thought it was wonderful, I’ve never done anything like this before. The Christmas lights are also wonderful. I hope this is going to be the first of many years to come.”
