Budding artists help celebrate Gainford school's 160th anniversary

Posted on December 14, 2016 by Unknown
PUPILS at Gainford Primary School have been taking lessons from a textile artist to make a three-panelled felt collage to mark the school’s 160th anniversary.
Mickleton textile artist Sara Cox visited pupils and showed them how to make felt out of coloured wool which they will later use to make a collage of the school.
Deputy headteacher Chris Reilly said this was just one of many activities planned for the school's anniversary.
The school has been given £2,000 from the neighbourhood budgets of county councillors George Richardson and James Rowlandson to visit Durham Records Office to research the school’s history.
A local historian will also provide training sessions for staff and the local community.
She added that as part of the legacy, pupils would be planting trees with the Riverside Trust and hold a birthday lunch with members of the village’s luncheon club. A story-teller will also work with pupils to help put older people’s memories of the school into stories. The project will end with a public exhibition of art, writing and photos of Gainford Primary School through the generations.
