St Mary’s Church, in Whorlton, will host a festive get-together on Friday evening, December 9, with music from Teesdale folk outfit, The Dalesiders, and carols from the 12th century to the modern day.
With First World War commemorations ongoing, stories from the trenches and the tale of Silent Night will be told.
Traditional Christmas favourites for everyone to enjoy will then follow.
Former churchwarden Ann Woodward said the new event would cap off a special year for the St Mary’s. She added: “The church has had a special appeal to raise £18,000 for the roof – the church has been very active this summer.
“We are trying to honour the church and value it because it’s been here such a long time – many people have been confirmed, baptised and married in it.”
With Nicky Tulloch on flute, Diana Wilkes on violin, Neville Kirby on accordion and Martyn Coates with Bob Morrow on acoustic guitar and banjo respectively, the band will recreate sounds not heard since pre-organ times.
“The band are full of very accomplished musicians,” added Mrs Woodward. “They are very keen to play music how it was before organs came in – it would have been how services took place two or three hundred years ago.”
Mulled wine and savoury nibbles will be available.
Entry is free and there will be a retiring collection for church funds and expenses.
Doors open at 7.30pm and all are welcome.
